Saint Eleutherius

Pope Eleutherius was the Bishop of Rome from c. 174 to his death in 189. According to the Liber Pontificalis, he was a deacon of the Roman Church under Pope Anicetus (c. 154–164), and remained so under Pope Soter, whom he succeeded around 174.

People must think of us as Christ’s servants, stewards entrusted with the mysteries of God. What is expected of stewards is that each one should be found worthy of his trust. Not that it makes the slightest difference to me whether you, or indeed any human tribunal, find me worthy or not. I will not even pass judgement on myself. True, my conscience does not reproach me at all, but that does not prove that I am acquitted: the Lord alone is my judge. There must be no passing of premature judgement. Leave that until the Lord comes; he will light up all that is hidden in the dark and reveal the secret intentions of men’s hearts. Then will be the time for each one to have whatever praise he deserves, from God.

R/ The salvation of the just comes from the Lord.

But the time will come, the time for the bridegroom to be taken away from them; that will be the time when they will fast. He also told them this parable, ‘No one tears a piece from a new cloak to put it on an old cloak; if he does, not only will he have torn the new one, but the piece taken from the new will not match the old. And nobody puts new wine into old skins; if he does, the new wine will burst the skins and then run out, and the skins will be lost. No; new wine must be put into fresh skins. And nobody who has been drinking old wine wants new. “The old is good” he says.’

Meditation
The solemn tone with which Jesus says, “the days will come…” (Lk 33:35) foretells his violent death and gives the reason why his followers in the present moment have to rejoice while the Bridegroom is still among them. Before that could happen, Jesus is planting the new form of religion while at the same time putting aside those rigid Jewish forms, making it clear that the old and the new cannot coexist. This new way of religion needs new lifestyle, not necessarily by observing Sabbath and fasting, but rather joy just like in the wedding.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Born in Macedonia, she became a missionary in India. Teresa had an encounter, which she heard Christ tell her, “Come be my light.” She formed the Missionaries of Charity, who set up hospitals and homes for the dying. In 1979 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work. Mother Teresa died in 1997 and was beatified in 2002.

When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water and pay out your nets for a catch.’ ‘Master,’ Simon replied, ‘we worked hard all night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I will pay out the nets.’ And when they had done this they netted such a huge number of fish that their nets began to tear, so they signalled to their companions in the other boat to come and help them; when these came, they filled the two boats to sinking point. When Simon Peter saw this he fell at the knees of Jesus saying, ‘Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man.’ For he and all his companions were completely overcome by the catch they had made; so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners. Meditation
Jesus is not only interested in crowds, he is also interested in you individually. He is never too busy to meet with you. God wants to reach you personally, like he did with Simon. Jesus was willing to leave the crowds in order to focus on just one person. But why does Jesus approach just one person? When Jesus comes into our lives, it is to take us from shallow faith to deeper faith. This is what happened to Simon. He had been washing the nets while keeping one ear listening to Jesus. Simon was working hard at his job but Jesus was going to do something special in his life. Notice that when Jesus asked Simon to sit in his boat, he asked Simon to put out a little from the shore. Then after he had finished teaching the people, he told Simon to put out into the deep water to go for a catch of fish. This movement from shallow water into deeper water is an analogy of what Jesus was going to do in Simon’s faith life. Jesus was going to take Simon from his superficial, half- hearted and casual attention to him and turn that into a deeper, more personal and real commitment to Jesus.

Au 4e siècle, à l’époque de la persécution de Dioclétien, alors qu’elle se rendait au puits pour y chercher de l’eau, elle croisa un cortège de moines et de vierges arrêtés et conduits par la police à Alexandrie en vue d’être mis à mort. Proférant plusieurs injures contre les dieux, elle se fit introduire de manière forcée dans le cortège alors que les policiers la repoussaient. Elle eut la tête tranchée.

Il est écrit en effet : C’est lui qui prend les sages au piège de leur propre habileté. Il est écrit encore: Le Seigneur le sait: les raisonnements des sages n’ont aucune valeur ! Ainsi, il ne faut pas mettre sa fierté en tel ou tel homme. Car tout vous appartient, que ce soit Paul, Apollos, Pierre, le monde, la vie, la mort, le présent, l’avenir: tout est à vous, mais vous, vous êtes au Christ, et le Christ est à Dieu.

Au Seigneur, le monde et sa richesse, la terre et tous ses habitants ! C’est lui qui l’a fondée sur les mers et la garde inébranlable sur les flots.
Qui peut gravir la montagne du Seigneur et se tenir dans le lieu saint ? L’homme au cœur pur, aux mains innocentes, qui ne livre pas son âme aux idoles.
Il obtient, du Seigneur, la bénédiction, et de Dieu son Sauveur, la justice. Voici le peuple de ceux qui le cherchent! Voici Jacob qui recherche ta face !

Il vit deux barques qui se trouvaient au bord du lac ; les pêcheurs en étaient descendus et lavaient leurs filets. Jésus monta dans une des barques qui appartenait à Simon, et lui demanda de s’écarter un peu du rivage. Puis il s’assit et, de la barque, il enseignait les foules. Quand il eut fini de parler, il dit à Simon : « Avance au large, et jetez vos filets pour la pêche.»Simon lui répondit : « Maître, nous avons peiné toute la nuit sans rien prendre ; mais, sur ta parole, je vais jeter les filets. » Et l’ayant fait, ils capturèrent une telle quantité de poissons que leurs filets allaient se déchirer. Ils firent signe à leurs compagnons de l’autre barque de venir les aider. Ceux-ci vinrent, et ils remplirent les deux barques, à tel point qu’elles enfonçaient. à cette vue, Simon-Pierre tomba aux genoux de Jésus, en disant: «Éloigne-toi de moi, Seigneur, car je suis un homme pécheur. » En effet, un grand effroi l’avait saisi, lui et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui, devant la quantité de poissons qu’ils avaient pêchés ; et de même Jacques et Jean, fils de Zébédée, les associés de Simon. Jésus dit à Simon : « Sois sans crainte, désormais ce sont des hommes que tu prendras.» Alors ils ramenèrent les barques au rivage et, laissant tout, ils le suivirent.

Notre humanité a besoin d’être remise à flot. Notre manière d’être s’attache à ce qui la fait vivre, et quand la déception s’installe, nous devenons prisonniers d’une routine devenue stérile. A quoi bon s’épuiser pour un travail sans résultat probant ? Et voila que Jésus nous interpelle et s’invite dans notre quotidien pour mieux nous parler à nous et à tous. L’empressement des uns fait face au détachement des autres. Jésus au milieu de nous rétablit l’unité, en prenant une place délaissée: celle du service de l’humanité démunir. Quand la fécondité de la vie Divine reprend sa place dans notre quotidien elle remplit le vide laissé par nos illusions, nos déceptions, nos limitations. Même la peur de ne pas être digne d’une telle grâce disparaît quand Jésus nous dit : « sois sans crainte ».

Elle aurait fui la maison paternelle à 14 ans, à la suite d’une apparition de la Vierge Marie, pour préserver sa virginité. Elle aurait passé ainsi les 16 dernières années de sa vie dans une grotte du mont Pellegrino, nourrie de la seule eucharistie que lui portaient les anges.

Puisqu’il y a entre vous des jalousies et des rivalités n’êtes-vous pas toujours des êtres charnels, et n’avez-vous pas une conduite tout humaine ? Quand l’un de vous dit : « Moi, j’appartiens à Paul », et un autre: « Moi, j’appartiens à Apollos », n’est-ce pas une façon d’agir tout humaine? Mais qui donc est Apollos ? qui est Paul ? Des serviteurs par qui vous êtes devenus croyants, et qui ont agi selon les dons du Seigneur à chacun d’eux. Moi, j’ai planté, Apollos a arrosé ; mais c’est Dieu qui donnait la croissance. Donc celui qui plante n’est pas important ni celui qui arrose ; seul importe celui qui donne la croissance : Dieu. Celui qui plante et celui qui arrose ne font qu’un, mais chacun recevra son propre salaire suivant la peine qu’il se sera donnée. Nous sommes des collaborateurs de Dieu, et vous êtes un champ que Dieu cultive, une maison que Dieu construit

Du haut des cieux, le Seigneur regarde : il voit la race des hommes.
Du lieu qu’il habite, il observe tous les habitants de la terre, lui qui forme le cœur de chacun, qui pénètre toutes leurs actions.
Nous attendons notre vie du Seigneur : il est pour nous un appui, un bouclier. La joie de notre cœur vient de lui, notre confiance est dans son nom très saint.

En ce temps-là, Jésus quitta la synagogue de Capharnaüm et entra dans la maison de Simon. Or, la belle-mère de Simon était oppressée par une forte fièvre, et on demanda à Jésus de faire quelque chose pour elle. Il se pencha sur elle, menaça la fièvre, et la fièvre la quitta. À l’instant même, la femme se leva et elle les servait. Au coucher du soleil, tous ceux qui avaient des malades atteints de diverses infirmités les lui amenèrent. Et Jésus, imposant les mains à chacun d’eux, les guérissait. Et même des démons sortaient de beaucoup d’entre eux en criant : « C’est toi le Fils de Dieu!» Mais Jésus les menaçait et leur interdisait de parler parce qu’ils savaient, eux, que le Christ, c’était lui. Quand il fit jour, Jésus sortit et s’en alla dans un endroit désert. Les foules le cherchaient ;elles arrivèrent jusqu’à lui, et elles le retenaient pour l’empêcher de les quitter. Mais il leur dit : « Aux autres villes aussi, il faut que j’annonce la Bonne Nouvelle du règne de Dieu, car c’est pour cela que j’ai été envoyé. » Et il proclamait l’Évangile dans les synagogues du pays des Juifs.

Il se pencha sur elle, interpella vivement la fièvre et celle-ci quitta la malade. Jésus va droit au mal qui ronge le cœur de l’homme. Son diagnostic est clair. C’est le péché et, au travers de ce péché, l’ennemi qui est le mal de l’homme. Et c’est à lui que Jésus s’adresse avec autorité. L’Ennemi ne s’y trompe pas. Son règne, au cœur de l’homme, est éphémère. Il ne résiste pas à la présence de Jésus car Dieu est plus fort que le mal, Dieu va au-delà du mal. Si l’homme reconnaît son péché et s’il proclame : Tu es le Fils de Dieu, le salut l’atteint au plus profond de lui-même.
